I truly believe in harnessing the power of young people to positively influence their peers. In my development work, I’ve witnessed the effectiveness of training youth on sexuality-related issues so they, in turn, provide accurate and appropriate information to their teens. Peer educators can support their classmates and friends in developing positive group norms and in making informed and healthy decisions with regard to their sexuality.
If they feel they have no other options, they may think that they have nothing to lose and possibly a few things to again – a baby, a relationship, a status. We really need to address the inter-locking factors that conspire against teen girls and increase the likelihood that they will experience motherhood in childhood.
